2008 ford expedition EL
Hello,
I'm new to this forum which I happened to find while looking for some answers on goggle.
I have a ford expedition 2008, has a 110.000 miles on it.
Few weeks ago I was driving to get my kids from school. on the way there everything seemed OK, tho I felt as the car didn't had the normal acceleration as it would normally have.
Just as I got my kids, and I was turning out from the school the car started fine and shifted to 2nd and 3rd gear and than it just stalled.. It felt like I hit and invisible wall, than it started going again, but as soon as I reached about 25-30mph same thing happened 1st 2nd 3rd gear and stall ( kind of felt like it went back to first gear.
I drove home in 3rd gear ( only like 2 mile drive) and haven't looked at it since.
tying to see what can be wrong before I take it to ford and spend an arm and a leg on the car.
I tried looking up the owners manual but not much help there besides they said to check fluid level and fuse..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there -
This is really an Explorer forum, but since we are very friendly people, let me try few things :)
Very often, what looks like a tranny problems are the engine problems.
In your case, you have a 5.4 3v v8 with 6r80 tranny which is almost same as some of ours 4.6 3v with 6r60/80 trannies.
Any codes ?
Check MAF sensor, clean the throttle body. Replace fuel filter if not done lately, are the plugs original ?

Hello,
yes I noticed it is an explorer forum :) when I googled expedition this side popped up asking to register, I did without noticing the main subject.. now I'm here :)

Anyway, fuel pump was replaced a year ago when it went out without any prior issues. I turned out from my street - luckily late evening when there was no traffic- and the car just stopped.. being downhill I made it to a parking lot where we had AAA tow it home. so the filter and pump even the fuses are 1 year old.

and no codes ?

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

sorry.. I must have clicked on something and my post got posted before finishing..

Anyway, I got no code, no check engine light no wrench no anything on the dash.
The car doesn't ask for help or attention it just simply wont shift from 3 and up.
For the last few month I have noticed some weird things happening to the car, like in the city where speed limit is 35mph the car started to act funny. Almost like it didn't get enough gas and was trying to stall, but taking my foot off the gas pedal or if I accelerated fixed the issue. It was always on 35-40 mph. now it just simply doesn't work. My husband has no clue when it comes to cars, he cant even replace a bulb so its me and the car left with figuring things out.

I will go ahead and disconnect the battery and leave it off for a good 30 min. I haven't tried that. I know there is 2 fuse for the transmission I guess I should check that as well, but I assume if it was out I would have no transmission at all..
Perhaps the weirdest thing is, even when my fuel pump went out I got no code no warning no check engine light no nothing.

When weird things happen, it may also be related to a bad ground cable (the one going from the battery to the body of the car, or a fender). Check for any corrosion, maybe loosen the bolt and retighten it.

Also, have AutoZone test your battery and alternator. When my wife's Tribeca was acting weird and was throwing all kind of stupid codes and behaviors, it turned out to be alternator going out.

When you say "stalled", do you mean the engine actually stopped running (zero rpm, had to restart), or do you mean it seemed to hit a rev limiter (which I know can feel like you hit a wall!).

If the later (meaning the engine actually kept running), then it sounds like the truck is going into limp-home mode. What does not make sense is that you are not getting any warning/check engine lights.

Often if there is a problem, but no CEL, there may be some "pending codes" stored in the computer. These are issues that might be a problem, but are not yet to the severity/frequency to throw a CEL. But a good code reader can check for pending codes, too.

Good luck.

PS - You are welcome here, of course. But you will get better answers if you go to an Expedition/Navigator forum. If you can't find a standalone site, check for a subsection in an F150 forum. Best you will get here are general answers/ideas. Better than nothing. But other Exped/Navi owners may know exactly what the problem is, if it's a known issue.

ok, the engine did not stop running, it literally went back to a starting point. to better explain, it feels like you go 50 feet fast and than you would just floor the breaks until the car comes to a full stop, than if you keep your feet on the gas pedal it will start again.. like when you would leave a light or stop sign, it accelerates and than again like you hit the breaks extremely hard stops. it almost feels like the tranni is thrown back to park position except I didn't put it in park. If I use the shifter and put it in 1 2 or 3 the tranni works fine, only does that in drive

cables are fine ground and battery OK, its a new battery -well little over a year old- no rust of any kind..no rain in s.california ( not that is a good thing)
the car is in a very good shape otherwise, had its regular oil change and recommended servicing at the dealership up until 2013. now just going to a regular place for oil change.

Then it sounds like a sensor, timing or fuel delivery or throttle problem. Just like TheBrakeman said, have the car scanned for codes. Fords are very bad with displaying codes. I had been driving for days with a misfire before I got an error and knew which cylinder was dead.

My wife's Expedition (2006) used to do something like that but would usually just stumble once then would return to normal. We traded it before finding out the problem.

This is where I usually go when I have questions about my wife's new(er) (2010) Expedition: http://www.expeditionforum.com/

Very helpful website.

Yeah, I was able to diagnose a misfire in cylinder #x by checking the Pending Codes with my Scangage. Swapped that coil with another one, and cleared the Pending Codes. Within a day, I had more Pending Codes in the same cylinder. Changed that spark plug and all is well. (Plugs had just been changed recently, so I only changed that 1).

Of the top of my head those early 6R80 transmissions have several TSB's out for them and are just an all around pain in the behind. Like mentioned already check for codes, I can guarantee that there is some sort of code in the system when the problem happens most likely a transmission code like a 3-4 upshift problem which could indicate a valve block/solenoid issue.
...Probably too late to comment on this thread since the OP may already be over at an F150/Expedition forum for his problem.
