short back story...

alternator failed, in the process of removing the fan shroud to replace the alternator i found that a previous repair used longer screws to attach the shroud and punctured the tank. (relief because it was an intermittent coolant leak and never could pinpoint exactly where it was coming from.)
r&r of alternator/radiator was as normal as it could be. Installed new alternator and radiator and when i started the car i was presented with four error messages
  1. the wrench icon
  2. Terrain Management System fault
  3. Service AdvanceTrak
  4. Collision Warning Malfunction
also a check CEL for P0102 MAF circuit low.
checked MAF connections and i did remove the front grill/bumper cover doublechecked the collision sensor connections as well as any others i had removed for the R&R. nothing obvious.

forscan gave me these codes. i uploaded the full logs but here are the codes.
Code: P0102 - Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor 'A' Circuit Low
Code: U0401 - Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM A
Code: U0418 - Invalid Data Received from Brake System Control Module 'A'

did not drop or otherwise cause any damage to MAF sensor
battery was disconnected for about 1 day during the repairs.
battery voltage is a stable 14.5 +- volts
backtracked and made sure everything that was unplugged was firmly plugged back in. cleaned MAF
checked and visually inspected all fuses related to ECM/PCM all good. i did notice the relay 66 Powertrain control module was warm after about 2-3 min idling.

cleared codes and all came back immediately.

still the same errors.

since there were no errors other than the check electrical system errors and it ran fine before, i am assuming its wiring related. disconnected something or pinched a wire. i am going back through what i touched but nothing obvious yet.

any thoughts on where to look?

Thanks
Sean

Did you use a Ford alternator or an aftermarket one? I don't know if an alternator could cause some of those issues but many members have had issues using non-Ford alternators. There is even a thread on that.

200 amp ford/motorcraft alternator for sure!

turned out to be a simple fix, went back through and double checked everything i had touched but the first time i was focusing on connectors. i looked at the pin side and found pin 4 on the MAF was bent, looked it was intended to be that way but upon further inspection of the connector i could see they should all be in line. not exactly sure how a middle pin got bent as the connector does a pretty good job of alignment.

all error messages were gone and the explorer was back to its old self. The Terrain Management, AdvanceTrak and Collision Warning errors threw me off and didn't think the MAF could be the root cause.

thanks for a forum to place my issue, even though i fixed it my self, sometimes putting your thoughts down in writing gets you thinking!

Isn't it nuts how a simple connection can wreak so much havoc...
