Hi Guys -

I am likely nearing the last couple of months with my Explorer, as it sits at 120K miles and rising costs of ownership continue to present themselves. That said, this site has helped me immensely over the past couple of years with basic maintenance that truly made a difference. For that - thank you!

My vehicle has been getting louder over the past few months, and I had a bit of a breakthrough last night in rush hour traffic. At a speed of at least 15 MPH, I can hear an intermittent rubbing or grinding sound that grows significantly as speed increases. I believe the origination point for the noise is in the rear of the vehicle.

Thoughts? Could this be a bad bearing, or am I hearing the start of a transmission issue? Or, am I a complete idiot (likely) and it is something glaringly obvious that is neither of those?

Regardless, thanks for your help as always. I want to make sure wherever I take the vehicle for repairs that I can avoid costly wild goose chases if at all possible.

I'd check the driveshaft and half shafts to see if anything is rubbing, jack it up and check the (rear first since it seems the location of the noise) wheels for smooth rotation and no wobble, and take them off and examine the brakes.

Could be as simple as tires that should have been rotated. When the rears begin to cup, they will really roar in time.

Don't ask me how I know.
