2017 Ford Explorer Utilit
Need opinions on a service problem. I own a ‘17 Ecoboost explorer, it’s a PD utility version purchased brand new and never used for law enforcement. Vehicle has been meticulously serviced at the same dealer since purchase. Nothing skipped, regular service as recommended in manual. Vehicle had a 5 year extended powertrain warranty.

On 1/15/21 at 64,363 brought in for normal oil change.
On 1/26/21 at 64,569 brought in for loss of power and minor white smoke from exhaust, dealer did TSB 17-2255. Not covered under warranty replaced valve cover adapter. Charged ~300 Made problem worse and white smoke now pouring out of exhaust. Rediagnosed as blown front turbo. Replaced under warranty
On 5/14/21 at ~66,000 bad 02 sensor. Not under warranty, but was caused by blown turbo. Charged ~225
On 10/21/21 at 78,530 brought in for normal oil change
On 5/27/22 at 89,355 brought in for normal oil change
On 5/31/22 at ~89,600 heard minor whistle noise, but did not call dealer
On 6/3/22 at ~89,700 same whistle noise, decided to drop off at dealer on 6/6
On 6/5/22 at ~89,750 white smoke and loss of power, dropped of at dealer on 6/5

Takes dealer four days to call back with diagnosis—both turbos blown, huge job over $4500, Warranty expired on 5/31/22

They might cover the front turbo since it was already replaced. My question is this.

Is it possible to do an oil change on a perfectly running vehicle and then blow turbos exactly 11 days and 9 days after the oil change… Twice??
Would Ford corporate authorize a repair that is 3 days out of warranty?

The normal powertrain warranty is 5 years, 60k miles so you are over the warranty by 29,750 miles. It's whichever comes first.

I bought the 5 year extended warranty 100k miles, sorry wasn’t clear

In that case, I would suggest calling Ford and asking them to open a case file to see if they would be willing to cover some or all of the costs. Only they can give you the answer, all we can do is speculate. Good luck.

The rear turbo labor is the majority of that estimate. By the book, it requires dropping the subframe. It can be replaced much cheaper than that estimate though. Here's what I would do... Have them fix what they replaced. The new front turbo should be covered under parts warranty regardless of the vehicle warranty.

Then I would have car reevaluated by an independent shop. Personally I'd inspect it myself. The rear turbo is visible by removing the passenger wheel. If its spewing oil it should be pretty evident.
