We just got an 18 explorer and the door code doesn't work. I checked the code under the dash and it is correct. Today somehow the key got locked inside so we tried the code on the door but it didn't unlock. My sister has a 19 and she tried it as well just to make sure I was doing it right. Where do I start to look to diagnose the problem and fix it.

It is possible that the previous owner may have changed the code. The only way to check it is to follow the instructions in the manual. The factory code cannot be erased and you will need that code in order to reset or enter your own code. Of course you have to get into the vehicle first.
Do you not have a second key? They all come with two keys from the factory. Do you have the Integrated key head key of a fob?

The 5 - digit keycode is hidden on a sticker on the backside of the cars BCM, tucked up in the driver side footwell on the left. But if you have both keys or keyfobs, you can get the original keycode to display in the Instrument Panel Cluster!

I have the original key code. I have both keys. We have gotten the car unlocked. Now I need to figure out if the key pad isn't working or like someone said the code has been changed. The car didn't come with a manual so I'll have to look it up.

The original factory key code works even if you program your own personal codes.
In my 2018 I can have 5 personal codes and the factory code, so six codes to unlock the door.

Here you go. You can get the Manual and info here; https://www.ford.com/support/vehicle/Explorer/2018/owner-manuals/
I always download the manual as I find it easier to use by using the 'find' option for PDF documents when searching for certain words.

If the key was in the ignition the key FOB will not open the lock. You can only use a key to open the door ( also when the car is running)).

How’s that now? I have both key fobs, how does one make the code display on the instrument panel?

I believe that is covered in the Owner's Manual.
EDIT: I didn't see it in the Manual but I believe I've seen it discussed before. The Manual just explains how to do it using the Securicode panel itself.
Have you gone through all the vehicle settings to see if anything comes up regarding the code?

Try this link to program the door code.
The member wants to display the code and change it using his Sync screen. The manual explains how to do it using the Securicode keypad but that isn't what he is after.
