$2600 for Manual Transmission!!???

Holy crap! So, it sounds like a tiny leak led to the death of my 92 Explorer's transmission. I called a couple places and they're telling me to brace for $2000 to $2600 to get her running again. SERIOUSLY??? Does that sound a tad high to anyone? One shop gave me an optimistic quote of $1500. Man...so what to do?

I've had three quotes for the actual rebuilt units. One was for $950 and the guy said that was "wholesale" price. Another shop quoted me $1200 for a rebuilt unit.

On another note, I did happen to call a local salvage yard. They have a tranny they'd sell for $500. I've never bought anything from a salvage yard. Whatta ya think about that option?

There is a reman place in TX, I can't remember the name/w3 addy. I do recall they had rebuilt M5ODs with warantee for $600ish. I bought my used M5OD from the local junk yard for $100 (they charged $40 to pull it - I was lazy). For $2000, you could buy a whole new truck.

Yeah those prices are crazy, you can get a transmission for 650 and it *shouldnt* cost more than 300 dollars to have it installed. I can get trans in my truck ready to go in about 4 hours with only hand tools. I shop should be able to do it faster than me.

That's a rip and a half! I got mine for around 900, totally rebuilt at a salvage yard.
