2nd Trans probobly dead, any realistic options?

Would a shift kit be a good idea? My trans has always shifted real soft. And sometimes the downshift to second was harsh. If you tried to pass sometimes it would delay and then slam into gear. the trans guy said they usually add the shift kit when they rebuild them. I didn't know if it would make the reliability less. Which I desperately can't afford.
