33x12.50 and 3.73's???? need help soon. could happen today!!!!

ive done nothing to the gears and its seem to have been running fine slower but fine, with new gears would you run alot more rpms on the highway,i use this truck as a daily driver dont want to be screamn at 60 mph. what gears do u think i should be running and i would have to change the front also.$$$$$

I'm confused..

As I read this thread.. He already had 33" tires (10.50 wide) and now wants to go to 33" x 12.50 tires.

If that is really the case, then the new tires will react just like the old tires did, with a little more rolling resistance since they are wider.

If you are indeed changing tire height then yes you should regear to at least get the effective ratio back to normal..

For example.. lets assume you hae 3.73 gears and 31" tires.. If you want to go to 33" tires you are increasing the tire size by about 6.5%. To get your rpms back where they were you need to lower you gear ratio (increase it numerically) by 6.5%. That would take your 3.73 gear ratio to about 4.0:1 which doesn't exist. The next gear ratio is 4.10 which is about 3.2% lower (numerically higher). That means if you change from 31 to 33" tires AND go from 3.73 to 4.10 your rpms would be 3.2% higher than they were before (and your speed would be off by 3.2%)..

Think about this for a second. What happens when you add larger tires? Your RPMs go down at a given speed. What happens when you put in lower gears? Your RPMs go up at a given speed, bigger tires=lower gears. For 35s you want 4.88s.

Maniak, he never said anywhere he had 33x10.50s nor does his build thread suggest so.

I have to disagree here.. I am the 2nd person to "think" he was running 33x10.50 tires from reading it in this thread.. Soo, either two of us misread what he said OR, the information that stated 33x10.50 is gone (it was in the signature which will show the new info once he changes it).

My last message gave the information needed to help make the decision whether or not he was running 33x10.50's..

Just to make sure I wasn't going nuts.. I did a google search on 1993fordexploere and 33x10.50 and Google has a cached messages from 6/10/2008 that has the signature of

when the going gets tuff........lock the hubs!!!!
1993 ford explorer, 4.0 automatic, Warn manual hub conversion and hubs, 33X10.50 bfg's, 3.73's,kkm air intake, 4 inch tuff country lift, warn xd9000i winch, custm front bumper

I knew I read it at the beginning of this thread...

so the rpm really would just be back to normal if i went with 4.88? it would be screamn on the highway?i would have to change the front also too right or can i just do the rear for now and not use 4x4?how much do new gears run and what kind should i put?im doing the motor right now but want to upgrade my gears if its bad for my tranny since i just had it rebuilt.

how about this kit Summit 14-0067 its only 4.56 though but includes a new locker and all parts need? any good? or should i see if they can change it to the 4.88 gears

technically, you dont have to change the front unless you have AWD (you dont) because unless you run 4x4 on the road  it wouldnt matter at all what your front gears are because the front diff doesnt get power unless in 4x4

but i would have to if i ever wanted to use 4x4 again right and how do i find out what front end i got?

ok people are telling me that i have a d35 reverse up front and they don't make a 4.88 for it and that i should just go with the 4.56 since i do allot of highway driving and that i shouldn't put a locker in the rear and to just make the front a positive trac to save money

Check with ericautopart (ef member).. He can get the 4.88 for the 1st gen x. I think people are confusing the 1st gen X with teh 2nd gen dana 35.

EDIT: I did a little searching on here (EF) and 4.88 was avaialble in 2006 and 2007 threads... The question is.. does someone still carry them for the dana 35 reverse rotation?

yea you can only do the rear, just cant put in 4wd. i shopped around and got quotes from 1300-2800 for both diffs getting geared. i went w/ the $1300 guys, and they did both diffs in 4.56 w/ install kits. some guys tried to charge me for new carriers and stuff but they ARE NOT necessary up to 4.56 however any larger you will require a new carrier. i believe you can get 4.88s in both stock diffs, but w/ new carriers. also i hav 35s w/ a relatively stock motor and A4LD, and i think i'd be a lil more happy w/ 4.88s. i hav no OD so i scream a bit on the highway anyway. go w/ 4.88s if you stayin w/ that drive train, but if yor ever goin more powerful stuff, just go w/ 4.56s

yea 4.56 seems too be better i think cost wise and before i rebuilt my motor i thought it was doing just fine with the stock gear, it was slower but its not a race car and i had mods before i rebuilt. thanks for the advice o yea nice lookn truck dora looks just like my white 92 haha

This is not true, there is no difference in carriers.

so you can get a 4.88 in ther w/ the stock carrier?!!
