I just picked up a 4.0 93 Explorer sport that had been wrecked in the front. I bought it for the trans, but I want to put the motor in my 1990 Bronco 2. Anyways, I put the engine on the stand tonight and rolled it over to remove the oil pan to replace the oil pump. Oil came out of the throttle body BIG time. Is this normal or are my rings shot? I never got a chance to here the motor run before I pulled it, so Im just wondering if its normal to have this happen.

Thanks

IMHO......and it's only that.

Since you got the engine on the stand and intend to put it into another vehicle........I'd re-build it.

Personally, I can never figure out why folks would go to a junk yard, get an engine of unknown reliability and put it in their vehicle just cause the guy at the yard said it was an OK motor.

Course, IF I knew the engine was low mileage and running good, that’s another story.

My labor is worth more then the aggravation, should something go wrong at a later date. You spent all that time to get everything installed and hooked up. Then, later, you find out you have bad rings. Please stop me, before I hurt myself.

You know....."Penny Wise, Pound Foolish."

Just my .02.

Well, after sobbering up some I realized what my problem was. I didnt drain the oil before putting on the stand and I had the PCV valve still connected so it went in through the PCV valve. I bought the entire vehicle from a guy who was driving it up to 2 weeks ago when he wrecked it. The odometer says 92,000 miles, but I am putting in a new oil pump, rockers and pushrods, timing set. Engine has no sludge inside it and the oil filter and oil screen have no particles in them so it should be a good motor. You are right though. If you're going to go through the trouble of putting it on a stand, at least replace the wearable stuff.
