Hi people just joined, and guess what I need help......
I've got a 4.0 L SOHC V6 1997 explorer and the transmission has gone. tough luck I hear you say, but there's more..... I drove the car down from good old England (UK that is) to southern Spain been here for a year with no trouble untill now.....HELP!!
I've taken the car to a english mechanic to repair it be still not happening. The car will drive in 4x4 low but it wont move in auto or in 4x4 high it just revs and makes a whizzing noise. (It's strange coz at times the car will work in normal drive then as I accelerate I lose the gears and the whizzing starts, so I have to stop the car put it into neutral, switch to 4x4low and then it will drive again). Anyway I've given the car to some Mexican's who deal purly with american cars but they are at a loss. So I got onto Ford and they have dropped the bombshell that they no longer sell the complete box only parts. So there must be someone out there that can help me?

Welcome to the site . :) You don't have transmission rebuilders there? For the most part, and auto tranny is an auto tranny. With the correct manual, and reputable builder should have no trouble piecing one back together. Your problem is definately odd. You can't drive in low on hard surfaces. You will ruin the front drive components, or the transfer case. I assume your tranny is just slipping really bad, and in low it gets just enough grip to make it move.

Hiya Mbrooks420 thanks for the reply, Crackcase said it could be the transfer case is this what we english would know as a transfer box, (sorry for the lingo mate) I had the box re-built but it never cured the problem so I am at a loss here the car has been of the road for the past 8months thats a new meaning for off roading. It's doing my head in now.

I dunno about the transfer case. I think the rear would still drive if the electromagnetic clutch wasn't locking up. I burnt up the clutch in my old t-case, and it drove fine in 2wd. No problems with the lingo. :)

hey sk1er17 glad I made your day coz am ucking stressed about it! I got the car so I could take it off road and boy hasnt that happened to me, 8 ucking months off the road and in the garage...... But anyway guys thing my mex connection might be able to solve the problem......He has getting the truck to towed.... wait for it to lads another garage..... For ucksake this explorer is doing the rounds here in spain..They say it's the transfer case and it's not electrical but it's mechanical.... Will keep you posted.. stay cool guys
