I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 4.0L Iam looking at doing some performace mods. I live in Canada so my resourses are limited so far Ive put on a K@N filter and a AirRaid throttle body spacer. In the future I would like to put on a Gibson cat back exuast. If anyone knows any other cheap or free HP mods please let me know.

Wellcome to the site.
Should you want to build real H.P. it will not be cheap. It never is.

I should have said easy mods cheap would be nice but I live in Canada and parts hear are never cheap

Unfortunately, mods are not very cheap. You said you have a K&N filter. Is it just a drop-in paper replacement? If so, a full intake kit will improve horsepower slightly, and gives a deep roar to the engine under hard throttle. I have a MAC intake, and it works flawlessly.

As for exhaust, you will get varying responses. Many prefer to just go to an exhaust shop and have a custom setup installed. Others like buying the kit and installing it at home. I did the kit and upon installation, discovered that the fitment was not good. I still have problems, and am looking at getting a custom exhaust done, just need to decide how much to spend, and how to configure the exhaust.

To top it all off, a computer reflash will dramatically improve performance. I did this on my Mountaineer, and it made a world of difference. Much improved throttle response, better fuel economy, and best of all, more power. BamaChips is one place that does programmers for the Explorers, and I was very pleased with mine. However, this mod is not cheap at around $400 for the programmer.

Some people on the forum have talked about headers for the 4.0 SOHC, and they are available, but the consensus was that the stock manifolds flow very well and that headers would provide a negligible increase in power.

intake, underdrive pulley, efan, tune, exhaust, throttle body, MAF

Thanks for the replys please keep them coming .

am in the same boat as you Les, am in nova scotia myself and finding parts at a good price is wicked hard. the only place to get them at a decent price is off ebay unfortunately....good luck

Off topic- Is gas as big of a killer there as it is here in the US?

Ontopic- Go with intake, exhaust then a tune. These are the "big three" with these trucks and you will notice a nice gain with these mods....and a nice sounding truck

Ebay is an AWSOME place to shop. I bought everything on my truck (except my muffler and subwoofer) from ebay. I love ebay, I dont know how I would shop without it.

Gas hear is about 85cents a liter right now. Iam getting approx 22mpg so compared to other cars Ive owned its really not to bad. But could be better.

85 cents a liter right now.

SAY WHAT!!!!!! That had better be a typo LOL

1.27 up the road right now, welcome to my world LOL

Bogfather you must be the one person in Nova Scotia with an explorer. I go up there every year for vacation, my starter went last year in my 97 Sport and I had to goto I think it was 7 stores, none of which had any in stock, I finally got it ordered from one place for like $170 for a remanufactured. I didn't and haven't seen any explorers there except for the ones I caravan up there with every august.

I think the biggest gain for me was the exhaust. There are a million options, but mine was relatively cheap.

I bought the following peices:
$15 - 10 foot length of 2.5" pipe
$35 - performance muffler from local shop
$00 - hollowed out the cat (since replaced- don't like it, but its legal)
$20 - labor for the guy at the local muffler shop to bend and weld
--------
$70 - Total - it sounds great and gave a very noticeable increase in power, throttle response, and gas mileage.

LMAO, thats funny. everywhere i go i see explorers since i got mine. old, new, dead but none have been modded yet in any way other then mine which i LOVE because she is unique. ;)

i put a supercharger on my 4.0 X and love the power increase.

93.9 US cents per liter?

So 93.9 cents x 3.79 liters in a gallon = $3.52 a gallon....wooo. We average 2.12 here in tampa

Everytime I goto Nova Scotia we average $100 towards gas just being up there for 6 - 10 days. Parts for vehicles are more expensive, crap for your house is more expensive, I don't know how people live up there.
