4.0 Timing Chain Rattle!!!

I just picked up my timming chain rattle correction kit. AKA a new remanufactured FoMoCo long block with all FoMoCo parts with a no fault core and 4 yr unlimited warranty.

It comes with a new dampner new water pump, new lower intake and tstat housing, new manifolds, plugs, oil, filter, gasket kit and hardware. 3,000 bucks. The rest of the truck is 8 out of 10 with just 2 cig. Burns in the seat at a scratch or two. Its a 0 rust truck lived its life in central VA.

It still has rocker panels? Most of the Sport models I see around here are missing most of the rocker panel now.

Excellent! For some reason the rockers on the Sport seem to disappear faster then the 4 door version.
My F-250 came from West Virginia, minimal rust compared to trucks from points farther north.

Good luck with that timing chain! I've given up on my truck for now, I'll rattle my way up and down the road in our rusty old minivan until I finally have money for it to be fixed.

Thanks. Hope to start on it next week.

Just to update, the engine is out, should get some disassembly done over the weekend.

I'm a new member, so bear with me please. I'm sure this had been discussed here 1000 times!
My '98 XLT has developed noisy chains, I'm familiar with the SOHC design. My first thought is to go with a Jasper replacement due to the mileage on the truck (189,500), but that is out of my price range right now. Before I pull the engine and replace all the chains and related parts I have been thinking about the tensioners. Reason being the left bank chain has been noisy on and off for a while. It was unusually quiet for a few days and suddenly today it's really noisy. Thinking the tensioner is bad or the oil flow is restricted in the passage where the nylon restricter is. Any advice is appreciated!!!

It is the rear tensioner making the noise. Glad you can do it yourself. Just make sure you lock the cam down. If that moves and alters your valves , your going to bend them when you start it. Then that's another big problem you opened up....

Understood and thanks. I have the timing gear tool kit to keep all the components where they should be.

Got some of the engine apart today, both left and right bank chain guides are gone, I can see some pieces left behind, that's it. Tomorrow I should have the timing cover and oil pan removed.

Seems the nylon oil restrictor on the left head is missing. Pulled the plug and I can't see anything in there. Seems very odd. The engine looks like it's never been apart before, first I suspected someone did a head gasket and forgot to reinstall the restrictor, but it looks like it's never been apart before.
