I have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT, and I was wondering how much of a headache it would be to swap my 4.0 out for the 5.0. Do you have to get a new computer, does it bolt right up to the previous engine mounts, etc... I need the whole rundown. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Everything will bolt up but you'll need the engine wiring harness, ecm, motor, trans, t-case, possibly a front drive shaft, exhaust, probably some fuel line work. it'll all swap in for the most part, you're best bet is to search as this has been done before. I'd also look for a wrecked V8 explorer and buy the entire thing and part out what you don't need. That way you're pretty much going to have everything you need.

So the tranny, t-case, driveshaft, etc.. from the 4.0 arent tough enough for the V8. thanks for the info. by the way.

You'll want to use the transmission from the donor vehicle. Like Doug said buy the whole donor truck, that will save you mucho time.

T-case usually requires an adapter. I am not too familiar with 2nd gens so I don't know if you have the BW1354 transfer case or not.

As far as I know, your driveshafts/u's (at least the rear) are fine. Perhaps there is a difference in the output shaft on the V8 trans but you'll have to ask someone else about that. Besides, getting a custom driveshaft is relatively cheap, and you shouldn't have to do that anyway unless you're also getting a lot (4"+) of lift.
