2004 mercury mountaneer
HI guys Im new to the explorer forum but im not new in the game. I recently bought a 2004 MERC 4.0 for my wife. while she was cruising without warning it started to bellow out smoke, burning oil. NO OVERHEAT, NO CEL!!! I had it towed to my local mechanic and he said the timing chain skipped a tooth and a valve popped a hole in the piston. I dont believe his diagnosis... The engine is running smooth but is smoking like crazy. The number 3 cyl is the one he diagnosed as being the problem has 145psi of compression on my gauge. any help would be appreciated guys. It only has 99k and i bought it from my inlaws and they are super **** about service and maint.... i hate to believe that this engine is toast

I was just messing with it, its really bad..... I need a car asap so its off to the dealer i go.... I think something with a bow-tie will be in my near future.

slipped chain

If the timing chain for bank 1 slipped all cylinders on that bank should have reduced compression. If a valve stuck open instead of the chain slipping then only one cylinder would have low compression. I suggest that you check the compression on cylinders 1 and 2 for comparison with 3.

A bow tie! Lame!

If you pop the valve cover I d suspect you'd find a bent valve stem. Or something visual.

It would be best to get a new motor. Don't make the mistake I made and just repair the chains...
