Contemplating something and looking for some real world advice. Searched a little on here and TRS but thought I'd ask anyway..

To be as specific as possible, is anyone running 33" tires in a vehicle with a 5r55e with 4.88 gears?

Planning a build, need some advice.. thanks in advance!

Are you street driving it? i had 5r55e with 33s and 4.56s.
it was too much gear imo. ran 2500rpm at 65.

If your looking for power and minimal 65 mph+ go for it. If its a daily driver then I would think about it only for the fuel economy reason. I'm running 4.88s in my ranger with 315/75/16 tires which are 34.6" tires and LOVE the power. My RPMs are pretty high on the highway but it cruises at 70 with ease. I do have a 302 in mine and its not my daily driver though. The sohc has great upper midrange power and would be much more efficient than a v8 with lower gears on the highway.

I run 4.88s with my 35s and they match up almost perfectly ratio wise to my stock setup of 4.10s and 255/70/16s. I think 4.88s might be a little too much although you had said you wanted it for a camping rig, so maybe that wouldn't be so bad. You could use the trans to slow you down on hills a lot more effectively with 4.88s over 4.56s.

Another thing is I think 4.88 is the largest gear you can fit in a D30, but I could be wrong.

well I found a YJ D30 already geared 4.56. Ranger isn't a SOHC, good ol reliable OHV so we'll see how 33s do with the gearing.

in the Explorer, 4.88s and 35s are perfect.

The general consensus I've seen seems to be 4.56=33s; 4.88=35s and 5.13=37+ but I'm sure that's nothing you haven't heard before.
