I have a 94 ford explorer and today I was out monster trucking some hills and whipping ****ties on the lake. After going up a couple of hills I started going up another one and heard a loud grinding noise. The rear tires would spin fine but I stripped one of the gears driving the front tires. Anyone know which gear is the most common to strip. I dont know if I should be looking at the transfer case or farther down at the actual hubs. When the four wheel drive is on I can hear it trying to catch and engage every now and then but for the most part it just makes a grinding noise. I have electronic hubs if that makes a differnce.

Search for "auto hubs" using the search function. A lot of the early Explorers have problems with them. A lot of the guys have converted over to manual hubs to solve the problem. I would look at the auto hubs first.

Second that. Sounds like the hubs are toast.

I would say your hubs are definately done for. Just had mine replaced last week($600) and i had the same thing happening

Yep, autos are gone. Get some nice manuals. There is a writ-up on my website. Click on the link below.
