4 wheel drive very noisy and cranky

I have just bought a 97 explorer which has had one previous owner, regularly serviced, 70,000 on the clock but not used off road- just school trips! When I put it into 4x4 it is really noisy- crtanky would be the word and on tarmac jumps around- is fine on mud etc. Is this usual? I wonder whether it is all dried up through non use. Had a landrover like this once and all hell broke loose when I put it into 4x4, the half shaft was swinging eound under my feet and my knees were up by my chin!

don't run 4x4 on pavement. If it is fine in the dirt but is binding up on the pavement that is normal.
