2003 explorer 4.6l
Hello,

I have a 2002 4.6l explorer 4x4 with 4411 xfer case. After
Investigating a wet spot on the driveway i discovered that there is a small crack in the transfer case by the drain plug.
After doing some reading it seems pretty comon if the plug is over tightened. Some have done temp fixes with jb weld or rtv.
I would like to replace the rear case half for a permenet fix. One wrecker wanted 200 + for the rear case half. I have a local pick and pull that will sell compleate transfer cases fo 80 bux but they dont have any third gen explorers.
Does anyone know if this transfer case was used on any other vehicles?

Thanks

just thought I would update what I did with the crack in the transfer case.
I wasn't able to find any other vehicles with the same case so I decided to go the patching route; I couldn't justify 200 bux for a used rear half replacement.

If it was aluminum I would of busted out the tig welder and welded her up but for what ever reason Ford decided to go with Magnesium. I have no experience welding Magnesium and have heard it can be dangerous if you get you work piece too hot; not something I was willing to play around with.

I lightly roughed up the work area with some mild abrasive cloth then cleaned it really well with some acetone. For sealing I used a product Called Marine Tex an epoxy putty. it is similar to jb weld in consistency but Marine Tex is much more durable; I find it to be a better product in my experience hence why it cost a fair bit more.
After applying the Marine Tex you have to let it sit for 24H to fully cure. after it is cured you can sand it ect what ever you like to make it look pretty.

I'll update this post if it ever starts leaking again but honestly I don't foresee any problems.
