Hey there fellas-

Just bought the Explorer about a month ago and new to the forum.

So I bought it from a guy here on base who took great care of the truck, and he warned me of one flaw before I bought it. I guess the 4WD module had gone out and quit working and would not shift out of 2wd and I understand that seems to be a common flaw among this model. He took it the the local Ford dealer and since he had no need for 4WD, he had the dealer flash the system and removed the driveshaft so the truck now thinks its just a 2WD. I'm stationed overseas here in Guam and the dealer wants $1300 to fix the problem. $1000 for the module and $300 for labor to reflash. My question or two to you guys is: Is the 4wd module also called the transfer case shift control module? I found it on Fordparts.com for less than $300 here http://www.fordparts.com/Commerce/ShoppingCart.aspx?addpart= 1L2Z-7E453-A . Is that the part I need? Also, where is this part located?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Mike

First verify what has been removed to disable the 4X4 system. I have never heard of needing to flash anything to make these think they are 2WD.

The module is located right behind the glovebox. Squeeze the sides together and push the glovebox to make it drop down out of the way. The module is right straight ahead and has a Motorola label on it. It has two connectors attached. If the module is gone are the connectors there and intact?

Check power fuses 17 and 18 in the fuse box under the hood near the battery. Those two fuses need to be in place and good for the system to work.

Is the front drive shaft actually removed? It does not have to actually be removed to disable the 4WD system. If it's out do you have it to reinstall?

If you need to get a new 4WD module I suggest you check at silverstatefordparts.com. Be sure to include your VIN when you search the parts list. There were at least 2 different modules in 2002 depending on model of Explorer you own. You are correct that these modules did fail on a lot of 2002s.

If you get the 4WD system working again you need to make sure that all 4 tires are the same size. That's critical to the system working correctly.

Let us know how you make out.

Went through this song and dance with our 02, there were also sensors in the transfer case that needed replacement.
Good luck!
