4x4 clunk and banging sound

On my 02 explorer when i put it in 4high and go around a turn i get a clunk and banging sound. It doesnt do this is 2 wheel drive and only makes the noise when im turning. I have no idea where to start looking to diagnose the problem so any help would be appreicated. Thanks

Don't turn in 4 wheel drive. Hi or Low

It puts a bind on the system.

When you turn, both wheels don't turn at the same speed. When the axel is locked, and you turn, something has to give.

are you driving it in 4 high and low on the street?

Sounds like your driving on "Dry Pavement", if thats the case, DON"T! This is a bad thing for your 4 wheel drive. Get some sand, or mud to play with the
4X4.

The noise is the worst on dry pavement, but it also makes the noise when in dirt or grass.

DO NOT turn in 4x4 mode on dry pavement !


you probably did damage to the system already, so thats y your hearing the noises on grass.
