Hi
I'm new to this forum. I could really use some help/advice. I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport V6 and the 4X4 high has stopped working. The light comes on but no 4X4. It will work in 4X4 low but not in high. Would it be the modulator? Any information or advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the same situtaion with a 06 sport. No lights and no clicks and no 4 wheel drive!

I have the 4X4 lights both high and low, I can feel her click into 4X4 Low but no High. I'm going to take the module out tomorrow and I think I have a used 1 which I'm hoping will fit. I contacted our local Dash Distributor here in Edmonton AB and there are no modules available here in Canada. I'll have no choice but try used. I'm also going to try tapping the housing as it may just be stuck. We've had a lot of snow and very cold temps here in Edmonton so it may just be froze up.
Good luck. I'll let you know how I make out.

I am not sure where the module is located on my ranger , I read in the fuse kick panel and also behind the glove box?

In my research for both the Ranger and the Explorer, it says either the glove compartment, passenger's side kick panel or the driver's side kick panel. What does it say in your manual?

Does your 4x4 light flash at all while the truck is running?
I had the same issue of no 4x4, but the buttons worked and when I shifted to 4low I could hear the click.

I changed both of the drive shaft speed sensors, located on the transfer case and everything is working again.

No, the lights don't flash, stay solid the same as if it was actually in 4x4 High but no shift she stays in 2 WD.

Sorry I didn't specify.
I mean do the 4x4 light flash during normal operation (AUTO), not when 4x4 High is selected.

Even though my 4x4 high light worked when selected, the truck was not engaging the clutch in the transfer case. I didn't think that the sensors would have anything to do with it because 4x4 hi was selected manually, but seems the system needs to have no faults for the clutch to be engaged, even when done via manual selection.

Sorry I cannot help more, Good Luck!

No the 4x4 lights don't flash when in 2 WD

You know what, my fault. For some reason my brain was not acknowledging that fact that you have a 01, sorry.I have been reading a few 4x4 issue threads and made a mistake. The 02 and up have the auto selection and not a 2wd option. Again sorry for the misinformation on my part. I hope I didn't create any confusion.

Not at all, I know there is a difference between the 01 and the 02, which is why I always put 01

4x4, no light or click

I am not sure where the module is located on my ranger , I read in the fuse kick panel and also behind the glove box?

I found the module after searching multipe internet sites. The radio needs to be removed and the bezel also (pulls right out). The module is located to the left inside, easy to get to.

I hit the module with a maglite and nothing happened. I removed the switch and checked for whatever and didnt see anything wrong.

I crawled under and had my wife switch the 4x4 back from 2 wheel and 4 wheel. She yelled it clicked.

I now have 4x4 and will engage it bi monthly in the future.

Thanks for all the help!!!!

So what was the problem?

HA, I forgot the important part. When my wife was switching back in forth while in drive. I was hitting transfer case with a rubber mallet.

What was the cure? I don't know? but it is working for now!
