The hubs on my 91 EB is doing some wird things. I am not sure if it is the hubs or the transfercase. When I use the four wheel drive every thing works great until I put it into low range. Once it is into low range it makes a horendous clunk as if the hubs is skiping or not locked into place. I have the push button 4x4. Could this prob be in my transfer case or in the hubs? would it be wise to just add in manual locking hubs? can anyone help? Thanks.

I had the same problem, man. My hubs, or should I say hub, was shot. I figured it would be a lot more heavy duty AND cheaper to put on manual hubs. Warn sells a kit just for explorers. You must buy both the hubs AND the conversion kit. It ran me about 200 bucks for the whole thing from 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers. Now, they work great.....

Hope This helps....

You know if it's fine to run 4X4 low drive with the front hubs unlocked? Will I damage something?

Why in the world would you do that????????? The reason for hubs and a transfer case on a 4x4 is to keep the wear on front end drive components to a bare minimum. When you don't need 4 wheel drive, unlock your hubs and put the transfer case in 2wd. THis disconnects all the front driveline components....thus less wear.......

Thanks for the reply! It looks like I may look into getting some manual locking hubs!

Hi Glen,
How are things back in Albuquerque? I was born in Albuquerque and spent my teens and early twenties there. Have you gone up towards Plasitas and the northern Sandias? There used to be some pretty decent trails there, just be careful not to go onto the reservation. The Jemez mountians just up past San Yesidro used to be pretty good. Hope this helps. Dead Link Removed You posted on the "Registry Forum" about places to go 4wheelin, but no one can reply to a post on that forum.
