We're looking to buy a good used 02-05 EB explorer. I'd like true 4x4 not awd. My question is did ford offer this in these years or are the all awd? Had a bad experience lately with an awd and would like to get one 2wd with 4x4 an option like my ford p/u. Also it appears from here that in these years the 4.6 is more reliable than the 4.0v6.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The 4.6L engine has been generally known to be a longer lasting/more reliable model than the 4.0L, however many have had no catastrophic issues with their 4.0L. I buddy of mine has 260,000 miles on his 4.0L and the engine has never needed to be serviced since day 1, however that is an infrequent miracle.

I am of the opinion that if buying, go for the 4.6L - the power gains are significant, and the fuel economy loss is negligible. I've driven both, and can attest.

The packages are broken down as follows, according to what Ford offered:

Ford Explorer (2002-2005):
- 2WD
- 4WD*
- AWD

Mercury Mountaineer (2002-2005):
- 2WD
- AWD

Lincoln Aviator (2003-2005):
- 2WD
- 4WD* ('03 model only)
- AWD

*The 4WD packages are Auto-4WD, meaning they will operate in 2WD under normal driving conditions, and the 4WD will kick in when traction deems it appropriate. They can also be forced into full-time 4WD LOW and 4WD HIGH when you deem it appropriate.

Thanks for the info. That was what I was needing!
