I have a 95 with 4x4 problems. When you are not moving you can turn the switch to 4hi and the light on the dash will come on saying its in 4 wheel drive but the front wheels will not move. If you are driving and turn it to 4hi the lights will start flashing and do it 6 times. i have cleaned the speed sensors and disconnected the battery but no luck. Any suggestions would be appriciated. thanks.

Can you elaborate on that?

What are you doing when:

When you are not moving you can turn the switch to 4hi and the light on the dash will come on saying its in 4 wheel drive but the front wheels will not move

The 1995+ transfer case is what engages the front end. Our hub assemblies are actually hub and bearing assemblies that are always locked. With the Sensa-Track and the shift knob in 4X4AUTO it will not engage the front driveshaft unless there is a detection of slippage on the rear axle. You will hear a clunk or a kind of grinding slipping noise; which is the transfer case engaging the clutch to turn the front driveshaft. (At least this is what I hear??) I believe that this also has the ability to regulate how much power is given to the front wheels via clutch (like a Subaru)...

I usually don't use the 4X4 AUTO on anything but snow or highway. I just put it in 4X4LOW if I am wheeling and not going over 40mph for a long distance (this could overheat the x-fer case). Doing this will prevent too much clutch wear and tear on the Transmission torque converter and the clutch in the x-fer case.
Then the front should be Locked so the distribution of power should be about 50/50 in 4L.

Though I may be full of shi*e. Hope this helps. There are many threads on these systems too, may check those...

hey

what i mean is that when i am driving in the car and i am stopped at a light or in the driveway or something the light will come on saying its engaged. but if i am driving down the road it will flash. It never had a problem before. I had it jacked up before and when i put it in 4 wheel all 4 wheels would turn. now when its jacked only the rear turn. I have checked the vacuum and when the light comes on the front driveshaft will lock and if you turn the driveshaft with your hand they will spin. If you take it out of 4wheel it unlocls and spins freely with your hand, not turning the front wheels. This happend after i hit a puddle of water, the lights started flashing. I turned it off and they didn;t flash anymore. They would come on if you turned it to 4hi but it wouldn't engage. I figured out it wasn't working during the winter when it said it was in 4wheel but i was fishtailing all over. i checked and found that the front was not spinning. Jacked it up and went from there. I have drained the fluid out of the case and found no water in it. Now i don;t know where to go from here. I know the motor to switch from 4hi to 4low is bad but this should not effect going from 2wheel to 4hi.

I believe this one is way beyone me. Good luck my man. :chug:

update

i now have the front driveshaft spinning, only problem is it does it in 2 wheel, but not in 4 wheel. So back to under my truck.

your front driveshaft will always spin. It is either your t/f case motor or the clutches... Go to Dead Link Removed
for more info on what it might be.

Just realized yours is a '95. Your problem could also be the vacuum disconnect on your front axle, which the 97+ Ex's don't have. But I don't think that would cause your 4x4 lights to flash. Chances still are the T/F case is screwy.
