4x4 Question...

I'm not real sure which section to post this thread, but I have a question about my 4x4. I have a 1995 with the 4x4 trac system or what ever its called. I noticed today that when I put the truck into 4x4 lo, the light on my console doesn't illuminate, but when I put it in 4x4 auto, it does. Is this normal?? Also, I really can't feel much of a difference with the switch on, but I've never owned a 4x4 before, so I have nothing to judge it by. Before I bought the truck a year ago, it had never been offroad, nor have I ever taken it off road. I just got a lift and 32's installed and I'm ready to see what she's got but I'm a little concerned about my 4x4 status. Any advice??

Hi lifted 95 -- most of your questions have been discussed before so please try to use the Search feature of the board.

But just to give you a quick ideas, to go into 4LO, park your vehicle on a level surface (or hold the brakes down) and put the shifter into [N]eutral, and then turn the switch to 4LO. About the not shifting into 4LO thing, typically this is a shift motor problem. When in 4LO, you should feel (and witness iton the tachometer) the engine's RPM rev almost three times higher than normal due to the lower gearing for the same speed. Again, please use the Search feature of the board as these topics have been covered a few times before.

Well I can tell you that you need to fix that. At the very least you will feel a huge difference once you're in 4lo. I have the AWD in my '96, so I'm not sure where to tell you to start checking, but do some searches and you should come up with something.

I'll try the neutral thing and see what happens. I tried it today but I was in park on a 45 degree slope. Thanks for the help and feel free to delete this thread. you have to put it into netural to engade and disengadge the 4-lo sometimes it helps to pump the brake a little once you turn the switch.

The shifting into Neutral worked to engage the 4 lo, but the transmission shifts very hard! I appreciate the help. I think I will take her to a shop to have it checked before using offroad.

Its supposed to be like that - dont use 4LO (or 4HI for that matter) on dry pavement - its okay if the pavement has snow or gravel on top of it but dont use it on dry pavement.

My father reiterated this for me this evening...lol Like I said, I'm new to the 4x4 scene. I've always owned lowered vehicles, 2wd. Me nor my wife have ever had the need to use the 4x4 before in the Explorer. Thanks for the advice.
