I got a 2002 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4 and i have a few questions on how my 4x4 works. Say if i got stuck while in 2x4 and i push for 4x4 wait till light turns on and then give it gas i get a loud clunk then 4x4 is engaged. Another thing is if i am already in 4x4 put in reverse to back up then put it back to drive spin my tires i get the same loud clunk. Is it suppose to come out of 4x4 once locked in? Do i have to engage 4x4 then roll a few feet for it to engage without clunk or should it be locked in once light is on? Thanks

Well, ya can't just hit 4x4 if you're stuck. If you are in 4x4 Auto and can't get out of a situation, you have to follow the guidelines/instructions on how to use 4x4. If you are truly stuck, and want to use 4x4 Lo, you have to be still, put the vehicle in Neutral, press 4x4 Lo, wait for the clunk, then back to Drive - but move slowly.

But you want to make sure if you are sliding around, wheels spinning, that you're not doing it in 4x4 Lo. And try not to slide around or spin the wheels :)

He doesn't have 4auto. The '02s have 2wd, 4high, and 4low. I think you're getting your years confused. (It's easy to do... the 4wd function gets blurry around the '02 model year... Explorer, Ex. Sport, and Sport Trac all used different systems)

What can happen is that the motor can turn the shift rail, but the lockup collar can be hung up on the teeth. Once the light comes on, it only means that the motor is in the proper position. Mechanically, the lockup collar could be waiting to fall into place, and that takes a slight difference in the front and read driveshaft movement.

It's always a good idea to gently apply the throttle if you shifted while stopped. When everything is moving (i.e. shifted on the fly) it's much easier for the system to get everything to mesh and make the transition coincide with the light coming on.

Hope that helps.
