I have a 2000 5.0 2WD Auto Mounty that needs a new motor(Bad knock ) . I have a 1988 Mustang GT motor sitting in my garage that needs rebuilt . Can I use the short block from the Mustang in my Mounty . They are both 302s Both have roller cams ,which are interchangeable .But when I look up the Crankshafts I get 2 part numbers at some places and then others that say Certain cranks cant be used with AODE transmission .
Anyone Have any ideas .........................

I did a 98' expo 5.0 swap into my 86' Mustang last fall and had no issues. All the necessary Mustang parts swapped directly onto Explorer long block. Car runs great. Cranks appeared identical on the outside, Mustang harmonic balancer, flywheel and pilot bearing installed without issue.

Was the explorer automatic?
My concern is My auto trans mating properly an not having issues . Mustang is 5 spd . I've never had problems before . Just wasn't sure after seeing some parts places saying crank won't work with AODE trans .

Yes, it had the 4R70W trans. All 5.0 Explorers are auto that I'm aware of. I've read of countless people swapping Expo 5.0's into Mustangs without a problem, don't see why it couldn't be done the other way around.

^^^ No vibrations? The biggest difference is the crank off balance I thought. The mustang /F150 302 is 28oz and explorer is 50oz. As long as you use the explorer balancer and flex plate your good to go.

I used the Mustang balancer and flywheel on the Explorer long block, smooth as silk. IIRC my 86' is also 50oz. Can't use the Mustang balancer in the Explorer anyway, not enough clearance and FEAD belt won't line up.

Yeah I know the belt drive is way different between the models. Maybe I'm confusing my counterweight info with the 351.
