Ok i'm gonna attempt to install my Fanatic P Fosgate component system in my explorer. Are there any recommendations around on what size MDF i'm supposed to use? Or do they sell plates/adaptors that i can just throw in there to change the enclosure from 6x8 to 5 1/4?

I had 5 1/4 JL Audio speakers installed in my front doors. I had tweeter do it...they made custom plates for me. I dunno what the specs are of the plates but I know you can buy them from crutchfield.

The sell plates you can buy, my component set came with a set actually, they aren't expensive... You could either go that route or like you mentioned, build your own. As far as building your own, I honestly would just use whatever size lumber you have... 3/4, 5/8, MAYBE 1/2, it shouldn't take too much. Good luck!

so where do i find the plates to buy them......if they cost about 20 bucks or less i'll get them.......would this be a lot less hassle then making them out of wood? i'm guessing it would be. Thanks for tha info!

Ahh hell, I always see them when I'm not looking, now I can't find them... Honestly, just about anywhere sells 'em. Making them is acutally a piece of cake. Take out the speaker, trace it onto a piece of wood, use a jigsaw (if you're using MDF it'll take forever to cut w/ a jigsaw, but its the easiest way) to cut it and the speaker hole out, and there you go. If you have scrap lumber it could be free.

I made my own plates for my Orion HCCA 5 1/4 comps, using 1/4" oak. I traced the shape out w/ the speaker, stacked three 1/4" pieces up and cut away making sure I did it carefully. Why three pieces? To make sure the edges on the plates I was going to use weren't roughed up or chipping out (just tossed out the top piece, since it was the one that would be chipped out some). Hope this helps.
