Not an Explorer.. it's a '94 Ranger 4wd 4.0.
Where can I send my 5 speed for rebuild or do an exchange for an overhauled tranny? Welcome any suggestions on places you've had good luck with. Thanks..Dave

I assume yours is the Mazda transmission (it uses automatic traqnsmission fluid as it's lubrication). Find a Ford dealer that discounts over the counter cash and carry parts sales. I strongly recommend that you get a Ford factory reconditioned one. The dealer that rebuilt mine under warranty took two tries to get it to where it works now (although it stills makes way too much noise). This is not an easy trnasmission to rebuild. I checked two shop manuals for rebuild instructions. One said don't attempt it. The other makes many references to special tools and gauges. Go for the Ford factory rebuild. In my area they contract to a company that does nothing but trans rebuilds among other items. you get a warranty also.
I was quoted $1500.00, discounted from $1800.00. (yes, wow!! is right)

Dave,

Another option would be to check out Dennis Hilliard at 4.0Liter Performance, which is a division of Central Coast Mustang in Santa Maria, CA. He has worked out a swap of a GM T-5 for the stock Mazda tranny. This is the same tranny used in Camaros and Firebirds. This is also a much heavier duty unit than the Mazda. The price in his catalog is $1599, which includes the transmission, bellhousing, throwout bearing, tailshaft and shifter. Apparently the stock clutch and pressure plate work just fine with this set-up.

I would contact Dennis personally for the straight skinny. His number is: 805-925-8848. They have a website too: www.centralcoastmustang.com
Click on 4.0Liter Performance.

Since you're gonna be shelling out a lot of hard earned cash, you might as well get an upgrade also.

Good Luck,

DOGMAN
