Alright so this has been going on for a bit but got worse and worse so i decided to check it out.

propped up rear end thinking it was wheel bearings, removed tires, put it in 1st and let it drive its self, put a brick on the gas and revved it up to about 3k rpm in second gear and listened with my prybar for any odd noises.

nothin'

went to shift through all gears... 3 4 and especially 5 had horrible grinding noises.

the fluid was changed recently by myself and it isn't leaking so low fluid isnt the issue.

im kinda leaning towards a pilot bearing but i dont quite know. :salute:

output shaft bearing

One of the output shaft bearings is shot. Happened to mine; first the whine, then my 3rd gear dog ring split off the gear from heat fatigue because of an unbalanced meshing. Gotta take it down and replace it or rebuild it.

Synchros. I drove mine for awhile with the synchros whinning, but it won't be long.

it doesn't make much sense to me that 2 synchros would go bad at once.. (3-4 and 5)

the output shaft bearing.. wouldn't that make noise through all gears? it's always moving.

and it's not a speed thing, it specifically happened only in 3-4-5 gears with both wheels off on jackstands driving it.

The only way to know for sure what happened is tear it down. My experience with a whining sound was that it was a synchro gear. I don't know for sure without hearing what you got, I'm only speculating. Another thought is your input gear may be stripped. I believe 4th is the only gear that doesn't run through it. Thanks.

Synchros don't whine. It has to be one or more bearings or some sort of gear damage. You have to tear it down to find out, and you would be crazy not to put it back together with all new bearings and synchros anyway.
