1999 Explorer Sport
I bought my 1999 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0L SOHC about 3 months. It is pretty much stock except for a bugshield and a pioneer headunit that I have just installed. I am not sure whether the vehicle has been well maintained or not. It is in very physical condition and seems to have been. I know the oil has been changed because of the sticker in the window. It is about 1k miles from needed an oil change. It runs great and their seems to be no problems. I know that there is some routine maitenance that I need to do. I need you all to help me out. What are some things I need to look at and consider changing? What are some upgrades that I can do? I am looking at of course a K&N Airfilter and possible a chip. Any ideas of who makes a good chip? Let me know about the maitenance because I am more worried about that than anything else. If you were wondering I am new to this forum. Seems to be a great place for information.

Thanks,
David

Regarding maintenance, why don't you take it to a shop and have them do a routine check on it? Check your service manual for the things that should have been done recently. Do the simple things like checking fluids, lubricated parts, etc. Get a repair manual from a parts store.

Regarding performance upgrades and any other questions you have, chances are somebody else has already asked that same question. Use the search function to find a ton of info on just about anything regarding an Explorer.

Screw taking it to a shop! That's a lot of money that could go towards mods. Get a Haynes manual, or Chitlins. I have a Haynes and it'll run you through the maintenance check and fix process. About $15 for the manual. Check all fluids, hoses, lines, tires, plugs, PCV valve is coming up on a replacement at 70k I believe.
