the white one...
I have a 91 XLT 4dr. I'm hoping to mount some JBL 6x9's in the doors. I also have a set of 6 1/2 rounds to fill out the back doors. Has anyone ever done this. By the diagrams, the factory hole seems to be for a 5x8 unit. I don't mind cutting a little metal if necessary. I just want to be sure the window, door panel, etc. will not be affected. Any help before I start pulling panels would be appreciated...

According to Crutchfield, your Explorer should take 6x8s, and therefore it should not be that hard to squeeze a couple of 6x9s into the openings.

No can do.The hole in the door for the speakers will olny accomidate 5x7 which is a mounting size for 6x8s.6x9s have a deeper mounting depth. Even if you got them to fit in the the door fanel would not go back on. The olny thing I would reccomend is perhaps a component system which could be adapted in to the 5x7 mounting hole (for a healthy price) or spend the extra money on a good set a 6x8s. I have Infinity Kappas and they sound awsome. Good luck!

If you manage to fit 6x9s let me know. As it has been mentioned, they will not fit in the factory location. If you cut the metal you no longer have a place to secure the speaker. Pull one door panel and take a look at it. The oval shaped metal piece screws into the metal of the door. There is only a small lip to secure the stock sized speaker as it is. I do not think it exists, but it would be cool if there was an aftermarket piece that would replace the stock black metal one. 6x8s will have 5x7 holes. That's why you many times see them listed as 6x8/5x7. Both sizes will fit in your Explorer. I have four Pioneer TSA-6818 (I think that is the model: 180 w) that I have blown. I plan to replace them with 5x7 plates in the rear and hopefully kick panels and a component system in the front. Tell me if you figure out how to do 6x9s.

I, for one, have decided against the 6x9's in the doors. I believe it can be done, which will shine a ray of hope for the obsessive/compulsive types... I have opted for 2 sets of Infinity Kappa 57.1cs components for a perfect fit and price!!
Thanks to all who responded...
See below how I came to this conclusion:

I had originally intended to mount 6x9's in the doors of my '91 Explorer XLT. Being a "can do" kinda guy , I'm sure I could have done it. I spent the day pulling panels, measuring, pre checking clearances for window brackets and door panels. Then I spent the night visualizing the nifty adapter plates I would fabricate, and the cutting I would do to accomodate the adapter plates...
The next morning, I stood looking at my impending project and "dug deep" for the internal fortitude to begin this undertaking. My girlfriend was very supportive and willing to help. She realized my apprehension to chopping up the factory configuration and consoled me with a suggestion: "Can't you just stick the speakers in the hole and wrap them a bunch of times with black tape to hold them in?" This made perfect sense to her(she was with me when I recently bought a ten-roll-pack of black tape)I knew her vision of a successful mounting strategy was beyond the scope of sanity, yet, I thanked her for her input and reminded her that there must be something in town that she needed to go shopping for...
As she drove off, I smartly patted myself on the back for my superior intellect when it comes to things like this. Then I wondered if some higher power, or wiser audio guru, might also consider my plan to be wrapped in a veil of delusion. I concluded this to be a distinct possibility. With all the cutting, fabricating, and all the thinking (I think I think too much...)My devotion of time and energy would render a mediocre installation of a speaker system that would be, well, mediocre at best...
After regaining my senses, I concluded that I deserve a better system, with less hassle!! I put down the sabre saw and went on the internet. Everthing came together. I found the "killer deal!!"
crutchfield.com is currently running a special on the Infinity Kappa series component speakers that will fit perfectly in the standard 5x7 speaker mounting hole. The model is: 57.1cs and includes (2)ea.- 5x7 midwoofers, satellite tweeters, and crossovers. Crutchfields regular price is $299,list at $429.

The current sale price is $179 per pair!!!
If you know speakers, you know Infinity Kappa series are amongst the best. And this is an incredible value at this price. I am ordering two sets to fill the door mounts, front and rear. I avoid the cutting and bracket making, and all the thinking... (And I don't have to use up my Y3K black tape supply.)And I get the speakers I deserve!!
Know what? You deserve them too... Avoid the cutting and bracket making and I've already done the thinking for you. All you have to do is buy 'em!!
