How bad is this? The trans is a 5R55W in my 2002 4.6L. I marked the face of the side that was facing me and it took 7 full turns to get 120 inch-lbs to click. The fluid was in terrible shape and smelled burnt and it had recently put up the code P0735. The pan magnet was coated with a charcoal-colored residue as well. Other than that, there weren't any larger metallic flakes. Prior to this, the truck had a pan-drop and filter change at 70,000km (~42,000 miles) and another one at 126,000km (~78,000 miles) when I replaced the solenoid block. At this point the fluid that came out was in excellent shape at 126,000km and now is completely torched 10,000 km (6,000 miles) later.
The symptoms were a sloppy 2-3 shift and the o/d light would start flashing if I failed to switch the O/D off going up moderate hills at highway speeds and forced the trans to downshift on its own.

I dropped the filter, unbolted the valve body and got about 5 quarts of fluid out and replaced it with 5 fresh quarts and took it for a drive, the shift quality has improved remarkably and 5th will now hold instead of downshifting at the slightest increase in throttle. It did get to the proper torque setting but with the severe degrade in the fluid in such a short time I do have my concerns. I will probably have a shop do a full flush to get as much of the bad fluid out as possible as well.
