86 Ranger Clutch question

So I am going to be buying an 86 Ranger and really the only thing it needs is a clutch. It is a 4wd with a 2.9L and 5speed. I've been told you can put a 4.0L clutch into it? Don't know if this is true? I don't know what transmission is had now just that it is a 5speed. Can anyone confirm this? Would it be worth it? Or just getting a used one for the same engine would be alright?
