88 ranger
I have an 88 ranger with the a4ld. Just recently it has been giving me problems. Wether cold or warm when i go to take off in either d or r i have to rev the engine before the tranny will kick in and go. It is also slipping inbetween gears and i have no overdrive. Anyone have a clue on what to check or do i just replace it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to this forum! There are several possibilities which could be the cause of the slippage. How many miles do you have? A sticking governor could cause a 1-2 shift delay. A bad or leaking modulator could also create problems shifting. Your bands, and kickdown cable might need to be adjusted as well. Your hydraulic pressure could be low as a result of leaking valve body gaskets, loose valve body bolts, a clogged cooler, filter, or valve body, or a bad boost valve. Connect a 0-300 PSI gauge onto the port which is located on the driver's side of the transmission. Check my signature for links to threads on adjusting bands, using a transmission pressure gauge, and for a thread called the A4LD valve body rebuild journal. The transmissions and transfer case section has a sticky thread written by Glacier991 on rebuilding an A4LD valve body.
