1999 Ranger XLT flareside 4x4 3.0L 5 speed 3.55 gears

This is my wife's truck but
gearing! what ratio would still
work with my 3.0L and maybe get better
mileage?
(what years of these vehicles will the axles swap from? I found an '86 with 4.10 rear) Also, has anyone put the part time hubs on the front of one of these? I hear they recently became available, and the gas mileage and lowspeed steering in parking lots suck with this thing so bad, I've considered removing the front axles (putting in dummy hubs) and the front driveshaft!
(my full size Jeep 4.2L got better fuel
economy with a carb, 31" tires and 2.72
gears and 3 speed auto!)

If you found a 4.10 gear and want better mileage, don't put that one in. Mileage will onlyget worse. I got a '01 w/4.10 and my friends Z71 gets better mileage than I get. Maybe you could try a 3.08, but you would have to change the gears in front and back, especially if you are going to do any offroading.
