91 explorer transmission down

I have 91 xlt and it will only shift into 1,2 and reverse is difficult it has to be warm. What options and advice from you all to fix this and on a limited budget (I know a big problem). It has 200 + on it and I am making it a practicle toy and to include fire dept search and rescue.

Ok I assume it is an automatic. My guess is its an A4LD trans look for trans code on the door T is an a4ld. If that is your tranny get ready to spend major $. I had one rebuilt for a Ranger 2wd and it cost 1200.00 bucks.
It had almost the same conditions you describe including slipping. Warming up helps but try the changing the filter and check the vacuum on the passenger side of the tranny fluid in the vac hose means its bad too. Ican tell you major horrer stories about this tranny. When its right its great, But when its bad its real bad. Dang things are made in France that should tell us somthing.

yes its a4ld is there an alternative that is easy to install and find, junk yard ect?

yea get one from the junk yard that is what i did same year and every thing else but word of caution make shur that it comes out of explorer or at least a 4.0 if not you will smoke the tranny in no time i got mine for 450 good luck
