Thank you MrShorty for the suggestion, I will try tapping the shift motor this weekend. If that does not do the trick I will try replacing the unit over the summer so that my 4X4 is in working order by next winter. Kamloops is all steep hills and winter driving without 4X4 is not pleasant.:hammer:

I had a 92 ranger that used to do the same thing. try this; on the back of the shift motor there are three screws hoding a small circular plate with some wires going into it. take something to mark the position of the plate(cover), remove the screws and plate, inside there is a printed circuit board. Clean the board with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip or lint free cloth. Next clean the fingers on the back of the plate, re-install the plate back into its original position per the mark you should have made. The motor should work like a champ, if not it is probably bad. Be 100% sure to mark the cover, if not the 4x4 processor will not know what position the transfer case is in and you will definatley be replacing the motor. Hopre this helps.
