A4LD unexplained fluid loss

My first post here but have been reading lots of posts, and stickys. I have known for a while that my governor was sticking but was waiting for good weather to address the problem. from the posts I have read this can be done w/o removal of the tranny . just dissconnect both drive shafts, unbolt the
transfercase and there it is . I understand this can be done w/o removal of the tailpiece however I think it might be easier to reassemble w/o the tailpiece.
Now to my main question, my trannie just started slipping, a little grind at first
and then a full slip checked the fluid level and it was low way low like a qt and a half just checked 3 mos ago and was fine .where did the fluid go? no huge leaks any where at least not tranny fluid any ideas. thanks in advance to all you guys for the stickys w/pictures and walkthroughs. I bet I could rebuild this sucker If I had too.

plan of attack
1 drop pan replace filter have a look around =17 bucks
2 remove transfer case and governor clean and replace
3 cross fingers hope it fixes the problem

please advise me if thre is something I am missing tips tricks etc.

Check your modulator hose... bet you have a leaky modulator...

where is the modulator?? I think its in the pan and its only 20 bucks. can/should this be replaced I think I read a post that said to disconnect the vaccume line
and check for fluid inside I,m gonna do this tommorrow the auto parts place just delivered the filter and gasket thanks

OK passenger side top left on a ranger do i remove the seat or can this be done from under the truck?? thanks in advance

From under the truck. Back end of the heat shield.

sounds like a P I T A theres not much clearance there.

<soft smile> uh huh. You have to remove the heat shield to remove the modulator though. PITA. Last time when I needed to do that I took it somewhere. Best $75 I ever spent. (blush)

Here is a picture of the modulator next to the 2 servo covers:

Update,
ok 92 Ranger HAS an access cover in the hump , rolled carpet back removed
the cover and there it was. Pulled the vac line and t-fluid came out. bad
modulator diaphram .removed the modulator wasn't easy but it would have been harder from below unless I unbolted the cats from both ends and pulled them out of the way. Still have to unbolt the heat sheild at the modulator and slip off the two clips on the pan.I could have used a midget to help cause i'm big and the places i was working was small.

One last question as I stated at the beginning of this thread I was having shift problems consistant with the governor sticking Could? the modulator have been the problem. I also had pulled the codes awhile ago and was running lean, I had a new o2 sensor so I know it wasn't that I was thinking a vaccume leak and technically this is one I pulled the pan as well was pretty clean in there just some spotty black spots rest was clean some very fine metal flakes at the bottom of the pan. I got 140 000 on this truck. so
the glitter in the pan doesn't bother me. sorry to be so long

What color is the metal? Bronze or silver ?

looked, silver very fine like dust no shavings or large pieces

I did notice when I pulled the filter part of the mesh on the filter had blown out
it was a bronze brass color

likely the rear wave washer and rear drum washer.... a troublesome point on these trannies.... and it is that stuff that usually clogs up the governor. On rebuilds I go away from stock there....I do not think I have ever seen a wave washer that didn't have some damage.

This is not a rebuild just problem solving (i Hope)

I was reading a previous post of glaciers and it said there is a race on the wave washer is this an on the truck repair or a rebuild thing? I still have the pan off till the morning thanks

I just had a thought is this replacable when I r/r the govener?

the rear race and wave washer are rebuild items.
