92 XLT 2WD Stalling

Hello, I have a 92 XLT 2WD Auto that as of yesterday dies when you put it in any gear. Here is some vehicle history. I bought the truck 2 years ago and it had a toasted tranny. Needing a desent vehicle for my new baby I bought from my sister with about 183k on it. Had a good known shop put in a used tranny. It now has 188k on it and yesterday my wife was driving and as she came to a stop it started shaking and died. It did start right back up again but dies in any gear. I have been reading about sensors and the torque converter. My problem is I am on a serious budget and I cant go and do torque converter and that not be it. I did change the Mass Airflow Sensor today but no help there. Is there a way to test the torque converter soleniod? I see it could also be a fuel pump? Does a 92 have a filter my haynes manual does not show one. When I put in drive it kind of clunks as it dies. Would the tcc error be stored in the computer and is it a KOEO test or a KOER test? This motor also has a tick at up hill accelleration like a flat valve or lifter maybe, could this be related? Thanks for the help.

does the engine rev. in park ? (can you increase rpm`s) or does it only die when in a drive gear. d, rev, ect

Try checking the vacuum connections on the vacuum tree. If one or more of them have fallen off, it could result in the condition you are describing.

Last spring my truck did the same thing, we replaced the TC solenoid and the TC itself and it still did it. Found a good used tranny and stuck it in and it's been fine since.

I can rev the engine fine. It dies instantly in any gear R, D, 3, 2, 1. Hope its not the tranny it was just raplaced not to long ago.

There are codes for a bad TCC solenoid, but they will only show up for the grossest electrical faults (eg full open or short to ground in the circuit). It's pretty easy to test the electrical, but this sort of thing usually ends up being crud building up in the valve body. If you're up to it, you might try pulling the valve body and cleaning it up real good.

Thank you for all your help everyone. Today I had just go ahead and give it to a trusted mechanic. Beings that this is the wifes primary vehicle and I am so busy with work I dont have the time for any guessing games. The shop is who my employeer uses and they are giving me a discount so hopefully I will end up ok. I will post what they find to help out others.
