'93 Stuck in park

Hi,
My 1993 4dr 4wd Explorer is currently locked in park. I cannot physically move the column shift out of P, no matter how much force is used. Prior to this the car was having transmission problems; couldn't get into second gear unless I rev'd up the car to around 4k in first for ~15 seconds, let it drop down to 2.5k and it'd eventually go into second and from then on it was just a little difficult to get back into second while the tranny was still warm. However this doesn't seem to be a related problem. I'm going to be taking the vehicle to be fixed I just hoped someone could give me some insight into the possible area of problem.

Park is a mechanical connection. THAT may be a linkage problem somehow. The 1-2 shift problem sounds like a sticking governor.

I sometimes get that problemin my 02 X. I have to press more than halfway on the brake to get it out of park. Have you tied pressing rather firmly on the brake? Take a look in your owner's manual for the manual park release mechanism; maybe something's wrong with it.
