My temperature gauge climbs pretty high lately in my Explorer. Not to the red zone but damn 3/4 of the way.

I'm thinking it should never reach that high. there has been a couple of times where it got *really* close to the red zone but she cooled herself off.

My fan does work and I do hear it come on, what would make her run so hot?

thanks guys,

leo

May be as easy to fix as changing the thermostat. Well, they're usually easy to replace, but our early model explorers are a little tricky and time consuming. Only three bolts to remove, but getting to them can be a pain in the butt. My '92 always ran in the same area as yours (and almost to the H when out west, couldnt' even think about using a/c) and I replaced the stock thermostat with a JET Low Temp stat. Then I realized that I could've just went and bought the lower temp stat at autozone and saved myself $6 for the JET name.

Could also be time for a good radiator flush. It's amazing what gets clogged up in there!

did you replace your fan with an electric one?

i would try the thermostat first.

Mine did the same thing, squeeze the upper radiator hose and let go to see if you feel any surge, if so your h2o pump is ok, then replace the temp. Plan on this taking a LONG time! way longer than it should. Remove belt get one of those swivel extensions for your socket and one of those elbo extensions. It is still a PITA. Then have fun as you cram the upper hose back on to the wierd housing and don't forget to squeeze the upper radiator hose to get out any air pockets. Don't underestimate the time this will take though. I have done several t stats and the ex has been the most difficult by FAR So just be prepared with the right tools and ready for aggeravation when the lower left bolt you can hardley reach keeps giving you a hard time. Just breath in and out and know that it can be done.
I have a 94 so probably the same setup. Hopefully yours is easier.

I'll look at replacing the t-stat this weekend.

thanks guys.
