I have a 94 explorer limited and just drove to texas from Nebraska, after i got here my tranny started acting up, i can shift into drive and reverse, but when i start driving, it will not shift through the gears automatically, but if i shift manually it will shift. then after about 15 minutes of driving it will shift fine. I checked the fluid level, and is fine. Please help i am worried its going to act up on the road and not get me home to nebraska, leaving tomorrow. Thanks

Wish I had some good news for you but it sounds like your tranny is in need of a rebuild. I would make sure I had AAA and a cell phone on hand before I left. You probably should take it to a shop for an opinion.

I just chcnged my post. If it shifts OK when warmed, it wouldn't be a band. If it were you would always have the problem.

You may just have a sticky governor preventing the 1-2 shift and assume the rest won't follow. If it shifts fine when warm, you do not need a rebuild. Not a big deal, just annoying mainly, easy to remedy.

How do you fix that problem with the governer?

You remove the transfer case, and up inside he extension housing you will see the governor, held in place with 2 small bolts. Remove the governor and clean it. If the governor body is badly scored and worn, you may need to buy a new body (not the entire governor, just the body - what I like to think of as the "stalk"). Somewhere in the A4LD Rebuild Diary I cover all this with pictures.
