94 XLT. Slow to shift out of first gear.

a couple days ago my trans stopped shifting out of first unless i backed off the gas.If the road is level it will shift on its own, but its still a late shift. Im going to do a trans service. I will try to adjust the bands when i identify which model trans i have. I was wondering if there was anything else i could check while the pan is off .Any servos i could manually move,that kind of thing.I was going to take it on the highway to see if all other gears are functioning normally.Is this a sign that i need rebuild it.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmission section. It sounds like you have a broken band. Does the problem go away when it warms up? If so, then it might have a sticky governor.
