I have had my Explorer for a few months now and I'm trying to get to know my Ex. Tonight I was replacing the headlight socket and noticed that the wire for the low beams appeared to be wired seperatly from the main wire harness. I followed this lone wire all the way back to the firewall. I opened the fuse panel only to find that this wire was ran into the fuse slot for the "left headlight", Yes, the fuse is in there too. The operation seems to be fine, everything works, low beam, high beam, no problem. parking lamps work fine. Should I be concerned? Why would someone do this? My message center says to check headlights, which I understand since the whole system is bypassed. I do not see an original wire off of the wire harness.

Thanks!

The "shade tree electrician" had a problem with the LOM module and instead of "fixing" it, he fixed the wiring .... which you will probably find is terminated on a fuse that is "hot in run" meaning your lights will come on when you turn ignition on.... maybe. Anyways, lots of post on LOM module problems.

How do I make this right? Believe it or not the headlight turns on when it the headlight switch is turned on. Just like it should be. I am not comfortable running around with this wire directly linked to the fuse panel. am I going to have to replace the entire front wire harness just to make this right?

Thanks!

reread his post , he said that the LOM is no good so that wire bypassed it, get a new LOM and install it , and take the wire out,, and all; should be good after that

The wire is directly connected to the headlight plug. If I take the wire out there is nothing connected to the low beam wire on the plug. I understand the LOM. I just can't find the original wire to connect to the headlight plug. (sorry, I left that out before)

Thanks!

that is gonna make this a little more involved,, maybe he cut the wire off outside the firewall and you might be able to find where it is,, look where the wires connect to the big plug by the firewall ,

Thanks! I am going to try and track it down. I will keep ya'll posted.

look for the color of the wire on the headlight harness, that will help you out too , ,

well... you probably need a little more "description" than you have provided if you want help as "my guess" was "first cut".... but likelihood of a LOM problem is high (common). So IF your lights work "normally" that's not that big a problem then.... as the last poster indicated.... the "shade tree-er" just bypassed the fubarred LOM module. IF you look close at the circuit... the run goes from the fuse box to the LOM to the headlight. Hence the "gentleman" just bypassed the "troubled" wire... no big deal as trucks without the LOM do that "naturally". good luck tracing wires ... ugly in any vehicle especially going thru firewalls and such. I suspect the "other guy" just cut both ends IF you are seeing a continuous run from fuse to light.
