I recently purchased a 95 explorer XLT and have had no problems with it except for an annoying intermittant rattle when I'm idling either in forward or reverse. It doesn't do it in park at all.?? It sounds as if it's coming from right around the alternator...It doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold. It stops rattling when I give it gas. Another thing is that when I'm idling, It's intermittantly idling really low. I just replaced the IAC valve last week and that didn't really help fix that, although the low whir noise has stopped. Any idea what's going on here?

Thanks!

could possibly be your catylitic converter.. check it out there may be a rock in the heat plate or possibly just a bad converter

well,

I took it to the shop this morning and they say that a tension pully is causing the noise and that it should be replaced with the belt. Does this sound right? Also, could the "Idler Tensioner Pulley" be causing my car to intermittantly have a low idle when at a stop sign or traffic light?

Thanks for your help!

Jay

The whole tensioner assembly is a weak point, and they are known to fail, not just the pully. I'd go ahead and replace that.

It likely has nothing to do with low idle.
