I was driving about 470 miles yesterday to get another X, and about half way there the check engine light came on, then went of a few seconds later. It did this about two more times, and then it stayed on. Pulled off the highway, restarted engine, no CEL until speding about 5 minutes driving. Stopped, disconnected the battery for abotu 10 minutes, got back on the road. CEL re-appeared about 20 mins later.

Drove around trying to find a code scanner, no luck, so we continued to colorado. Once we got there the light never came back on as we were running around town. Checked the spark plugs thinking it might have been a misfire code, they were trashed. Replaced the plugs, wires, air filter, and cleaned the MAF. Truck instantly ran better.

About 4 hours in to the drive back, the CEL came back on again... Autozone's scanner couldnt even talk to the ECU when we were there, even though there wasn't a CEL present at the time.

Ideas? Is a dealer the only place I can get the codes checked? How much is that going to cost?

Might be worth it to pay the 60 bucks that the dealer would charge to scan it.

I would try a few more autozones first.

I bet their scanner won't work because it is a 95. The plug under the dash on those is fake, the 95's are still OBDI with the plug under the hood.

Tell them that and try somewhere else, although I've never seen a parts store that will scan a OBDI vehicle.

So i have to do all the funky stuff with the jumpers under the hood and such then eh? Bummer =/
