Daughter has one and she said the heater quit working on friday. Filled the interior with smoke. Friend of hers says the heater is actually working but the electronic gizmo that controls getting the heat and or a/c into the interior sparked and started a fire in the insulation. He is pretty sure that it is toast. They went to wrecking yards looking for the gizmo but could only find 4 prong units instead of the 5 prong unit that is needed.

I am sure you can tell my usage of correct terminology, that I am useless in this department. Can anyone tell me if this gizmo can be replaced and what is it really called. Something module is the right phrase or close to it.

Thanks for you help.

Sounds like the "blower motor speed controller" needs to be replaced. According to diagrams it has 5 pins and a 5 pin unit has been used over a number of years. Not positive, but I believe that it is located in the same place on most of the Gen 2 Explorers, so if someone took yours out, you should look for a replacement in the same general area. Good luck.
