95 Ranger with shifting problems.

My 95 ranger drove fine to work, got in it to leave and would not go. So i manually shift it to 1st then to 2nd and went fine but would not go into overdrive. I tried diconnecting the batterey and it worked fine but then it did it again. I was woundering if it may be a cencer or if the tranny is shot.
