hey all,

wondering if i could have some advice

i have a 1996 explorer ohv v6 engine :exp: . 138,000 miles. engine well maintained.

i live in southern california, approx. 90 miles north of san diego. my girlfriend lives in san diego and i travel down there ever so often and i plan on taking my ex.

does driving back and forth between cities put a lot of stress on my engine? what should i look out for?

i love my car, and id hate to see her go down...yet id hate to see my relationship go down too... :D

anyway..love to hear from ya'll :burnout:

keep everything in good shape and that truck will last you a long time..my 96 has about the same amout of miles and i put close to 500 more on it last weekend somehow with all my crap on the roof i still managed 20mpg on the highway. lesson: keep a truck in a solid state of repair and it will treat you well.

Over 270K on my 96. It's never left me stranded.

Take care of the transmission. Get a half dozen coolers and strap them to the roof ;)

Our 96 had 125,000 miles on it when I loaded it up and me and my fiance drove from Massachusetts to Montana (approx. 3000 mile drive) with the cargo area loaded to the roof (with rear seats folded down) and a rooftop carrier stuffed full. Got us out here without any problems. I did install a tranny cooler since it did not have one from the factory. I also installed an aux. tranny filter. Take care of the tranny and you will be fine.

Driving to see your girlfriend is probably easier on your truck then your normal driving at home. Think about it...you're on the highway, you'll probably be in 5th most of the time, not wearing on the clutch/shifter, the engine's at a pretty steady RPM level, you're not using the brakes. I would say that the 90 miles to San Diego are about as hard on your truck as 25-30 miles in the city would be.
